Save Local Fertilizer Guidelines

Save Local Fertilizer Guidelines

As you may have heard, the Florida state legislature made a sneak attack on local government urban fertilizer ordinances in the very last days of the legislative session. Slipped into the final 2023-24 budget sent to Governor DeSantis, this move prohibits local governments from adopting or amending urban fertilizer ordinances that include a rainy season application ban.

The prohibition is tied to a $250,000 appropriation to the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida for a study to “evaluate the effectiveness” of seasonal fertilizer restrictions. Both the prohibition and the study need to go!

Tell Governor DeSantis to Protect Water Quality

Please join us in urging Governor DeSantis to VETO line item 146 of SB 2500, a complete ban on creating or modifying local fertilizer ordinances.  This line was included in the budget in the final days of session. By using the budget bill, the preemptive language was able to be inserted with a complete lack of public input or debate.

Clean water is of paramount importance to Florida. The legislature should be striving to enhance our water supply, rather than seeking to undermine local protection efforts. Our state’s communities and industries are dependent upon good water quality and ecological preservation.

Local ordinances that ensure responsible fertilizer application work to avoid immense levels of nitrogen and phosphorus-based fertilizers being dumped into waterways at high-risk times of year. Without these ordinances, we risk harmful algae blooms that are dangerous to humans and deadly to wildlife.

Take action by asking Governor DeSantis to VETO line item 146 of SB 2500.
